Legendary Island of Columbus – Today a World Heritage

The volcanic island of La Gomera is situated in the Atlantic west of Morocco and is part of Spain like all the seven Canary islands of the archipelago. More than 500 years ago Christopher Columbus started his journey to the New World from La Gomera.

This legendary island has since become a World Heritage. Right in the middle of the island of La Gomera you find the national park GARAJONAY. The fairytale laurel forest, the heather trees which grow up to several metres – witnesses of the tertiary age – and the succulent green of the vegetation pampered by the trade winds, all of these were acknowledged worth of protection by the UNESCO more than 20 years ago.

Steep slopes, magnificent views of the Atlantic and at times of the neighbouring islands of Tenerife, El Hierro, La Palma and Gran Canaria and not least the sunny bathing bays with their black sand: This varied landscape is a dream for walkers and searchers for the sun alike.
